Just days after wrapping up the 92nd General Assembly, House Speaker Matthew Shepherd of El Dorado made a visit to the Twin Lakes Area this week as the guest of Representative Nelda Speaks of Mountain Home.In an interview with KTLO, Classic Hits and The Boot news, Speaker Shepherd says while previous sessions have been highlighted by one or two large issues, the most recent one had several. Listen:
Shepherd says he was pleasantly surprised the House members worked efficiently without any flare-ups leading to divisiveness. In the process, they worked through and approved issues that will impact residents of North Central Arkansas.
Shepherd says he is considering running for a second term as Speaker of the House. Colleague Joe Jett of Success in Northeast Arkansas has indicated he also intends to seek the position. Representative Jett serves as chair of the House’s revenue and taxation committee.
If Shepherd’s colleagues support him for a second term, he will join a short list of those who have served two terms as House speaker.
The members of the House will select the next speaker at the end of the fiscal session in 2020.
