Mixed results among area teams in Friday’s regional action

Several area baseball and softball teams were in regional tournament play on Friday.

Norfork’s baseball team watched its season come to an end in the Class 1A Region 2 Tournament at Viola. The Panthers fell to Armorel 11-1.
Viola will be the Tigers’ next opponent in the semifinals. The Longhorns secured a state tournament berth after shutting out Ridgefield Christian 10-0.
Mammoth Spring also advanced to the semifinals after defeating Calico Rock 7-0. The Bears improve to 13-11 on the season.
Mammoth Spring’s next opponent will be Izard County after they topped Hillcrest 7-2. Gunner Gleghorn was the winning pitcher as he went the distance and gave up four hits and one earned run.  The Cougars are now 13-4 on the year.

Salem won its opener in the Class 2A North Regional Baseball Tournament at Marked Tree. The Greyhounds doubled up East Poinsett County 14-7.
Melbourne did not fare as well in the next game. The Bearkatz lost to McCrory by a final of 3-0.

Norfork’s softball team was one and done in the Class 1A Region 2 Tournament at Viola. The Lady Panthers fell to Armorel 16-1.
Viola will be the Lady Tigers’ next matchup after picking up a 16-0 victory over Mammoth Spring. The Lady Bears finish the year at 5-14.
Calico Rock was able to secure a bid to next week’s state tournament. The Lady Pirates shut out Maynard 20-0.
Calico Rock’s semifinal opponent will be Hillcrest. Izard County fell to the Lady Screamin’ Eagles 19-0.

Salem wrapped up the first round of the Class 2A North Regional Softball Tournament in dominating fashion at Marked Tree. The Lady Greyhounds pounded Barton 13-3.
Melbourne was able to take the opening game of the tournament. The Lady Bearkatz defeated Marked Tree 7-2.
