Local baseball, softball teams’ mixed results open state tournaments

Area baseball and softball teams have had mixed results to open state tournament action on Thursday.

Flippin was one and done in the Class 2A State Baseball Tournament at Mountain Home. The Bobcats fell to McCrory 16-6 on Pitts Field at McClain Park.
Three other games were played on Pitts Field. Lavaca routed Riverside 12-1, Woodlawn edged out South Side-Bee Branch 11-10, and Parkers Chapel beat up on Conway Christian 12-2.
Salem won its opener at Lester White Field at Cooper Park in Mountain Home. The Greyhounds, designated as the host team, eliminated Hector by a score of 10-8.
Salem’s next opponent will be Junction City. The Dragons shut out Carlisle 9-0 in the first game of the day.
In the other games on Lester White Field, Horatio beat Conway St. Joseph 6-1, and Bay destroyed Danville 14-4.

Two area teams faced off in the first game of the Class 1A State Baseball Tournament at Taylor. Viola was a 32-1 winner over Jasper. The Longhorns’ quarterfinal opponent will be Bradley Friday evening at 5:30.
Izard County picked up a 14-4 victory over Omaha in another battle between local schools. The Cougars’ next game will be Friday in the quarterfinals Friday morning at 10 against the host Tigers.
Mammoth Spring was bounced in the mid-afternoon session. The Bears lost to County Line 6-2.

Harrison was victorious to begin the Class 4A State Baseball Tournament at Southside Batesville. The Goblins topped Camden Fairview 5-3, and they’ll take on Valley View in the quarterfinals Friday at 10.

Three area softball teams began action in the Class 1A State Tournament hosted by Taylor.
Viola dominated the opening game at Magnolia High School as they blanked Western Yell County 15-0. The Lady Longhorns will be paired with Hermitage in the quarterfinals Friday morning at 10.
The two other area schools squared off as Calico Rock beat Omaha 20-2 at Taylor. The Lady Pirates will meet the host Lady Tigers Friday afternoon at 3.

Salem’s softball team began hosting the Class 2A State Tournament in Mountain Home on a winning note. The Lady Greyhounds grabbed the 9-7 decision over Hackett on Freedom Field at McClain Park.
Salem’s next opponent will be Quitman Friday morning at 10. The Lady Bulldogs doubled up Murfreesboro 4-2.
In the other games on Freedom Field, East Poinsett County defeated Hector 7-2, and South Side-Bee Branch pounded Horatio 10-1.
Melbourne breezed through its first game at Keller Park. The Lady Bearkatz pounded Lavaca 9-2.
Melbourne will play Parkers Chapel Friday at 3 on Freedom Field. The Lady Trojans squeaked by Magnet Cove 3-2.
Also at Keller Park, Poyen doubled up Cossatot River 2-1, and McCrory shut out Danville 8-0.
