LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) The Arkansas Board of Education has decided to shutter a small but award-winning elementary school in the Cleveland County School District.
The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports that the state Education Board voted 7-0 Thursday to close Kingsland Elementary School. The local School Board initially voted 6-1 in April to close the school starting in the 2019-20 academic year.
But the elementary school was formerly part of an Arkansas-designated “isolated” school system. The designation required the state Education Board, by law, to make a final decision on closing the school if the local board didn’t make a unanimous vote.
Kingsland Elementary, which had an enrollment of 71 students as of April 8, received a National Blue Ribbon Award this year. It was one of three Arkansas schools to receive the distinction for student achievement.
