Credit: Austin LordA new track from Peter Frampton Band‘s upcoming blues covers album, All Blues, a rendition of the 1970 B.B. King hit “The Thrill Is Gone,” got its premiere Thursday on Billboard.com, and has also been posted on Peter Frampton‘s YouTube channel.
Frampton tells Billboard that he recorded the song as a tribute to King, who died in 2015 at the age of 89, after regularly playing the tune with the blues legend during the U.K. guitar whiz’s 2013 Guitar Circus Tour.
“I can’t really think of the words that describe that feeling, but it was pretty stupendous,” Peter says of his experience playing the classic song with B.B.
Frampton’s version of the tune was recorded with his longtime touring band, as was the rest of All Blues, which is due out June 7. Veteran blues guitarist Sonny Landreth also lent his talents to the track.
Meanwhile, as previously reported, Peter will launch a farewell tour next month after revealing that he’s been diagnosed with inclusion body myositis, a degenerative muscular disease.
Frampton shares details with Billboard about a series of albums he’s been recording since October, doing as much work as he can before the disease affects his ability to play guitar.
“We must have done nearly 40, 45 tracks, and we’re still going,” reveals the 69-year-old musician. He figures he’s completed three albums, adding that “we’re working on a fourth right now, and after that, I think it’s time for a Christmas album!”
Frampton says he is planning to release an album of original songs, a set of instrumental covers and another blues record featuring more tracks from the same sessions that yielded All Blues.
Peter also reports that he has started writing a memoir, and says the project has inspired him to write more lyrics.
