“American Civil War, Then and Now” by Kevin Bodenhamer will be the topic at Tuesday’s meeting of the Baxter County Historical and Genealogical Society. The meeting will be held at 6 in the Knox Room at the Donald W. Reynolds Library Serving Baxter County.

Bodenhamer’s talk will examine the war from both Union and Confederate views and its impact on local citizens during the war. He will discuss post war issues and notable leaders from the 20th century influenced by the Civil War and conclude with how do we honor those men who fought so long ago.

The Baxter County native says his ancestors made their way down from the Marshfield, Missouri, area to North Central Arkansas after the Civil War (1871). He says the Bodenhamers helped build Baxter County since it was created in 1873. He says he has tried to continue his family’s commitment to building a great community in which to live.

Bodenhamer graduated from Mountain Home High School in 1989 and from Arkansas State University with a bachelor’s degree in secondary education in 1993.

He has been a history teacher at Norfork High School since 1996. He is a member and past president of the Baxter County Historical Society and helped establish the Mountain Home Downtown Commercial Historic District.

Bodenhamer served eight years on the Baxter County Quorum Court and is currently serving on the Baxter County Library Board of Trustees and treasurer of the Mountain Home Rural Fire District.

He was also a team member in helping restore the Historic Wolf House in Norfork, which is now a part of the Arkansas Department of Heritage. He is also a past commander of the 27th Arkansas Inf. Camp 1519, Sons of Confederate Veterans and present commander of Wiggins Battery, Civil War Reenactment group.

Bodenhamer says he loves to teach his students and others about the importance of learning our history and all aspects and viewpoints about American history.

The Baxter County Historical Society meets the fourth Tuesday of each month. Most meetings are held at the Donald W. Reynolds Library Serving Baxter County and are free and open to the public.
