Springfield man dies after Buffalo River outing

For the second time in nearly a month, a death has been reported near the Buffalo National River. According to river personnel, 66-year-old James Long of Springfield was found unresponsive Thursday evening and pronounced dead a short time later.

Newton County Dispatch advised at approximately 6:30 of a man having trouble breathing at Upper Pruitt. Rangers arrived to find Long, and life-saving procedures were in progress by emergency personnel. Long was transported by ambulance to North Arkansas Regional Medical Center in Harrison, where he was pronounced dead.

A Texas man died at the Buffalo River on June 5. Sixty-seven-year-old Melvin Perkins of West Orange was with his family tubing on the river. He later went to cool off, and when his family joined him at the truck, they found him unresponsive.
