Benefit set for local sheriff Saturday

A benefit for Izard County Sheriff Earnie Blackley is set for Saturday at the Izard County Fairgrounds in Melbourne.Sheriff Blackley was diagnosed last month with Stage 4 lung cancer. He has posted on Facebook that he is being treated at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock.

The cost of Saturday’s benefit is by donation.

The event will feature a barbecue dinner, with all the fixings, at 4, followed by an auction at 5:30. Live entertainment is scheduled until the time of the auction.

Blackley was elected Izard County Sheriff in November. He succeeded Jack Yancey who was appointed to the position in April 2017 to finish Tate Lawrence’s term. Lawrence died while in office after a short battle with cancer.
