The Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) recently held its National Leadership Conference in Anaheim, California, and four Calico Rock High School students shined in a pair of Students Taking Action with Recognition (STAR) competitions. Brooke Littrell and Emma Grigg received a gold medal in the Life Event Planning competition, and Bella Hall and Cassidy Mendez took home a silver medal in Food Innovations.

According to a Calico Rock High School press release, over 8,700 participants from around the United States attended the conference to attend leadership and program trainings, hear national speakers, meet youth leaders from across the country and explore college and career options. Over 4,700 FCCLA members competed in the STAR events in which they were recognized for proficiency and achievement in chapter and individual projects, leadership skills and career preparation. Youth and adults work together in managing the events and serving as evaluators of the participants.

In addition to Life Event Planning and Food Innovations, other STAR events include Early Childhood Education, Entrepreneurship, Sports Nutrition, Fashion Design, Job Interview and Culinary Arts. Calico Rock’s four national competitors advanced to the national level after first competing in district and state events.
