Mountain Home Mayor Hillrey Adams has appointed a five-member oversight committee for the city’s recently approved entertainment district.

Mayor Adams says the committee’s responsibilities will include receiving applications for events and festivals within the entertainment district, as well as signage for the area.

The committee consists of council member Jim Bodenhamer, downtown merchants Duncan Clayton and Lori Gregory, Food Bank of North Central Arkansas Executive Director Jeff Quick and Mountain Home Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Vice President Angela Broome.

In June, the Mountain Home City Council approved an ordinance establishing an entertainment district by a vote of 5-3, with Mayor Adams casting the deciding vote.

Passage of the ordinance follows legislation passed in early April by the Arkansas General Assembly allowing the formation of entertainment districts under certain restrictions where outdoor drinking is permitted.

Mountain Home’s district runs from Hickory to Church Street and from Fifth to Eighth Street and excludes Mountain Home City Hall, the Baxter County Courthouse and Hickory Park.

The council’s approved amended ordinance says merchants within the district boundaries with an ABC license will not be selling alcoholic beverages in carry-out containers during the Mountain Home Friday Night Block Party. Instead, sales of carry-out containers will begin after the conclusion of the block party or roughly 9 p.m.

The new state law allowing for the formation of entertainment districts becomes effective Wednesday, while the city’s ordinance takes effect Friday.
