“We Were”: How Eric Church unknowingly wrote a hit that taps into the relationship of Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman

ABC/Image Group LA Eric Church returns to number one this week with “Some of It,” his first song to reach the pinnacle since “Round Here Buzz” in January of 2018.

“Some of It” isn’t Eric’s only song on the chart, though: He also co-wrote Keith Urban‘s latest hit, “We Were.” He didn’t even realize the Aussie superstar had recorded it, however, until Keith called and told him.

“The coolest thing for me is, I didn’t send Keith the song and say, ‘Here’s a song I wrote,’” Eric says. “He found it, and it honestly, it fits him more than it fits me.”

“There’s a line in there about ‘two heartbeats in the moonlight, leather jackets on the back of a Harley.’ I don’t ride a Harley,” he explains. “Call it poetic license.”

“He and Nicole used to do that when they first started dating, and they were touring,” Eric adds. “They would jump on his Harley and…put on their leather jackets and they’d go ride up through the countryside…I did not know that until after he cut that song.”

Eric says he “truly believe[s] songs find the path they’re supposed to find, and that one was supposed to be with [Keith].”

He laughs, “Now, as it goes number one in a few weeks, I’m gonna rethink that a little.”

In truth, Eric admits Keith cutting his song may mean as much to him as the success of “Some of It.”

“I came to this town to be a songwriter,” Eric points out. “So for me, I’m not sure that’s not as proud as I’ve been, as when you can get a song cut by somebody else, and then it becomes a hit.”
