A Marion County man, 47-year-old Matthew Williams of Summit, has been arrested and charged with felony counts of residential burglary, breaking or entering and theft of property, as well as a misdemeanor count of criminal mischief.

The charges stem from an incident on July 13 when a Marion County Sheriff’s deputy was dispatched to a scene along County Road 4054 described as a verbal dispute regarding a robbery along Cardigan Lane. According to the probable cause affidavit, while en route, the deputy was advised the situation was escalating, with the suspect’s car reportedly being pursued by others in a truck.

Dispatch advised a male, later identified as Williams, and a female companion had abandoned their vehicle. Williams reportedly fled into a wooded area, while his female companion was walking toward State Highway 125.

The victim told law enforcement he and his female companion returned home along Cardigan Lane and observed the suspect’s car speeding away. The chase ensued until they spotted Williams’ abandoned car. The victim and his companion reportedly return to their residence waiting to see if Williams’ car would drive by. They left for a short while, returning to find their residence and two outbuildings had been broken into, with items taken.

After the discovery of the illegal entry, the two contacted acquaintances advising them of the incident. The female acquaintance is a caregiver for Williams’ mother.

The woman reported she went to the home of William’s mother. She found Williams there and advised him law enforcement had been notified of his alleged actions and offered to help him if he would return the items.

The woman said she went with Williams to the area in the woods where he had allegedly placed the stolen items. The items included a bow, backpacks, a computer and clothing.

Bond for Williams was set at $10,000.
