Baxter County is being recognized as the best place to retire in Arkansas for the second time this year. USA Today last week ran an article from 24/7 Wall Street featuring the best place to retire in every state.

Mountain Home Area Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Jeff Pipkin says the recognition is flattering, but it was something the chamber staff and other area residents already knew.

According to the article, the population in Baxter County is just over 41,000, and 30.5 percent of the residents are at least 65 years of age, which is the highest rate of Arkansas’s 75 counties. The median home value is $124,400, and Baxter County’s estimated monthly living expenses for a family of two ranks 39th in the state at $3,478.55. In addition, primary care physicians are estimated at 85.4 per 100,000.

Pipkin says another factor in making Baxter County one of the best places to retire in the country is that it’s surrounded by two lakes and three rivers.

Baby Boomers (born between 1946 and 1964) started turning 65 in 2011. The National Institute on Aging reports the generation is retiring at a rate of 10,000 per day. By 2030, 20 percent of the United States’ population is expected to be comprised of elderly Americans. That’s a climb from 15 percent in 2015.
