The organization known as FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) has different programs in which students from around the world learn about engineering and technology by building robots to compete in several different activities. One program is the FIRST Lego League Junior, and a group of students from Pinkston Middle School and Hackler Intermediate School has been all over the globe competing against other students from different countries and cultures, and their most recent trip was to Australia.

The Mountain Home team took part in the Asia Pacific Invitational in Sydney earlier this month. Pinkston math instructor and FIRST Lego League coach Chrissy Davis was a recent guest of the Talk of the Town on KTLO-FM, and she says the competition included 41 teams from over 20 countries, and Mountain Home was one of three from the United States.

While the Mountain Home team didn’t come home with an award, Davis says the true prize was learning about different cultures and making new friends from other locations.

There are three different parts to the FIRST Lego League for Mountain Home students to compete in. The first part is the designing and programming of a robot. The second stage is the project in which competitors are given a problem to solve. The third part of competition is core values to show how well the teams work together.

Davis says the FIRST Lego League team is getting ready for the next season, and there will be information on the program available when Pinkston holds its open house Aug. 8.
