Plant Family Therapeutics is one of 32 dispensaries to be located across Arkansas in eight zones established by the state, with the idea of creating less travel time for patients in more rural regions of the state. The awarding of the dispensary licenses, as well as five for growing medical cannabis, follows Arkansas voters approving the state’s Medical Marijuana Amendment in 2016.

While a number of dispensaries across the state are utilizing renovated facilities, Plant Family Therapeutics is being built from the ground up.

As the community awaits the opening of the dispensary, Mickle says the owners and investors are encouraged by the feedback they are receiving.

Mickle, who has a master’s degree in public health, told KTLO, Classic Hits and The Boots news in an earlier interview medical cannabis offers an alternative to the opioid epidemic taking hold over the last 10 years. He said he has seen patients struggling with chronic illnesses and diseases with no other option than synthetic pharmaceuticals. The cannabis alternative gave him a purpose that excited him.

Other owners of Plant Family include Mickle’s mother, Linda McAnally, and her husband, Jeff, owners of M&M Landscape and Lawn in Izard County; and the company’s executive director, Michael Lunsford. In addition to the family members, other owners include a Conway neurologist and a Fort Smith optometrist.

Earlier this month, Arkansas Times reported Plant Family was approved to allow owner James Compton to transfer his 40 percent ownership stake in the business to Giving Tree LLC, a business he owns with his sons Ken and Kevin Compton.

The number of potential customers for Plant Family and other Arkansas dispensaries continues to grow. As of Friday, the Arkansas Department of Health has issued 19,227 medical marijuana ID cards.
