3 people dead after hours-long standoff

HELENA-WEST HELENA, Ark. (AP) – Officials say three people are dead after an hourslong standoff in the eastern Arkansas city of Helena-West Helena.Police say the standoff began Tuesday afternoon after two people were found dead in the front yard of a home in Helena-West Helena, about 100 miles (160 kilometers) east of Little Rock. Memphis TV station WMC reports a man fired on responding officers, and a SWAT team later responded.

Helena-West Helena Mayor Kevin Smith says the SWAT team entered the home and used flashbangs to draw out the suspect. The mayor said in a statement that the suspect died in a shootout with police.

Authorities have not yet released the name of the man killed in the shootout or the two people who were found dead earlier.
