Melbourne is one of five area high school football teams to start the season this Friday night in Arkansas’s Week 0. The Bearkatz will play their opener on the campus of Hendrix College in Conway.

Melbourne head coach and athletic director Kevin McCarn is beginning his seventh season at the helm of the football program, and he says the Bearkatz have had an encouraging offseason.

Melbourne has advanced to the playoffs in three consecutive seasons, and under McCarn’s leadership, 2015 is the only year the Bearkatz have not moved on to the postseason. He says this year’s team is not very deep, so they will need to stay healthy to extend their playoff streak.

Charleston will be Melbourne’s opponent to open the 2019 campaign. McCarn says his team will be facing a Tiger team rich in tradition.
