Shout! Factory Santana was one of the many top artists who took part in the inaugural US Festival, held over Labor Day Weekend in 1982. Now, 37 years later, Santana’s performance at the event is coming to home video.
Santana Live at US Festival arrives on Blu-ray and DVD on September 6. In addition to the band’s 11-song set, the package also includes interviews with Carlos Santana in which he reflects on his career and his signature sound.
Santana’s set came on the second day of the festival, which was conceived by Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak and legendary concert promoter Bill Graham as an answer to the “Me” generation of the ’70s.
That day, Santana performed between sets by Eddie Money and The Cars — remember, this was 1982 — and other acts on the bill that day included The Kinks, Pat Benatar, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers and Dave Edmunds.
Santana’s set included performances of classics like “Black Magic Woman,” “Oye Como Va” and “Hold On,” and featured a guest appearance by jazz legend Herbie Hancock on the song “Incident at Neshabur.”
Santana was one of two acts who’d played at the original Woodstock Festival to appear at the US Festival. The other was The Grateful Dead.
Other acts who played that inaugural year: The Police, Talking Heads, Jackson Browne, Fleetwood Mac, The Ramones, The B-52s, Oingo Boingo, Gang of Four, Jimmy Buffett and The English Beat.
