Reprise RecordsNeil Young has shared some interesting details about the cover art for his forthcoming album with Crazy Horse, Colorado.

In a post on his Neil Young Archives website, the folk-rock legend reveals that the cover was created by his wife, actress Daryl Hannah, using two photographs, plus an original painting by Neil’s daughter, Amber Young.

“[Hannah] used one ‘shadow on a horse’ photograph she had taken and one photograph she had collected and edited, selecting a section and turning it upside down,” Young explains.

“Added to those was a painting my daughter…did a few short years ago. Amber’s painting, shown on its side in the cover, is about 6 feet tall by 3 and a half feet wide [that]…she created, working with wax and colors.”

Neil adds about the painting, “It represents an audio envelope to me. I just love it and always have.”

One of the photos shows a horse and its reflection as it runs beside a body of water, while the other shows the shadow of Young’s head wearing a hat captured against a horse’s body.

Referring to the first photo, Neil writes, “Notice how the top left of the cover has a picture of a horse and a reverse image below it? The way that image represents my right shoulder, I am part horse! I just love this cover.”

Young also reveals that Hannah has designed the back and inside covers for Colorado, as well as the cover for the seven-inch vinyl single included with the LP version of the album.

As previously reported, Colorado will be released on October 25. Young recently gave fans a taste of the album by posting a brand-new song called “Milky Way” on his YouTube channel and Neil Young Archives.
