At the rally, Waters dedicated an acoustic version of the 1975 Pink Floyd classic “Wish You Were Here” to Assange, who is being held in a London prison as he awaits a February 2020 extradition hearing.

The hearing stems from charges that Assange conspired to hack into a Pentagon computer network in 2010.  He was arrested in April 2019 at Ecuador’s U.K. embassy, where he’d lived for seven years.

Waters played the tune behind a large banner that read “Don’t Extradite Assange;” he was accompanied by veteran U.K. guitarist Andy Fairweather Low, who Waters said he’d invited to join him for “moral and musical support.”

During the protest, which was held in front of London’s Home Office, Waters joined with the crowd to chant “Free Julian Assange!”  According to RollingStone.com, he also commented, “How do we put ourselves in the position of a Julian Assange in solitary confinement, or with that kid in Syria or Palestine or Rohingya, being blown to bits by these people in this building here?”

You can watch videos of Roger’s performance on various YouTube channels.

Meanwhile, the new concert film Roger Waters Us + Them premieres this Thursday, September 5, at the Venice International Film Festival in Venice, Italy. As previously reported, the movie then will be screened in theaters worldwide on October 2 and October 6.

The film was shot last June during Waters’ four-night stand at Amsterdam’s Ziggo Dome, which was part of his 2017-2018 Us + Them tour.
