Miranda Lambert plays her 'Wildcard' — literally — but doesn't show all of her hand

ABC Radio Monday evening at Nashville’s iconic Exit/In, Miranda Lambert played the majority of her new Wildcard album for an invitation-only group of Music City insiders.

In addition to already-released tunes like her current hit “It All Comes Out in the Wash,” “Locomotive,” “Mess with My Head,” “Bluebird,” “Pretty B****in’,” and “Way Too Pretty for Prison” — with Gwen Sebastian singing the Maren Morris part —  Miranda also debuted some of the as-yet-unheard tracks: “White Trash,” “Holy Water,” “Tequila Does,” “Track Record,” and “Dark Bars.”

The Texas native went on to explain what a “big decision” it was to make her first record without longtime collaborator Frank Liddell, who’s produced every album she’s ever made, including the ones with Pistol Annies.

After a “bottle of wine on the magic porch,” Miranda revealed he “gave [her] his blessing,” and she reached out to Jay Joyce.

“I knew I needed to approach this record with the same energy and heart and open-mindedness and excitement that I approached my very first record, which was in 2005,” she told the crowd. “I just kind of wanted to be open and pushed and Jay was the man to do that.”

“So I feel like in a way, I reinvented a new rock and roll sound for myself on a few of these songs,” she added, “but also, in a way, I’ve revisited the rock and roll sound that was invented in the first place.”

There are now only three tracks from Wildcard Miranda left unsung: “Settling Down,” “How Dare You Love,” and “Fire Escape.” We’ll be able to hear those November 1, when the full album comes out.
