The second of two people who found the battery dead when they jumped into a get-away vehicle to avoid drug testing in Stone County has been sentenced.

Online court records indicate 39-year-old Charles J. Youngberg was sentenced on a negotiated plea last week to a year in the county jail, with three months suspended on a misdemeanor charge of fleeing. He was given credit for having served 214 days. A charge of hindering apprehension was nolle prossed.

In late February, Youngberg and 38-year-old Rebecca D. Avey were ordered for drug testing and were spotted by an officer of the court running for their get-away vehicle as they exited the Stone County Courthouse. However, as the duo jumped into their vehicle, they realized its battery was dead.

Deputies caught and detained Avey, but Youngberg was able to escape.

Online court records indicate Avey’s charges of third-degree escape and hindering apprehension were nolle prossed in May through a negotiated plea in connection with another case. In the second case, Avey faced two felony and two misdemeanor drug-related charges, as well as a driving while intoxicated offense and refusal to submit to a chemical test.

Avey was placed on supervised probation for five years and ordered into one of the state’s Community Correction Centers for drug treatment.
