Gus Stewart/RedfernsPink Floyd‘s David Gilmour was among the many special guests at a concert celebrating the 70th birthday of acclaimed British folk-rock guitarist Richard Thompson, held Monday at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

As seen in fan-shot videos, Gilmour sang and played guitar on a rendition of Thompson’s “Dimming of the Day” and Pink Floyd’s “Fat Old Sun.”

“Dimming of the Day” originally appeared on Richard’s 1975 album Pour Down Like Silver, recorded with his then-wife Linda.  Gilmour delivered a solo during the performance that included a portion of the one he played on Pink Floyd’s “Comfortably Numb.”

“Fat Old Sun,” which was written by David, appeared on the 1970 Floyd album Atom Heart Mother.

Gilmour also joined Thompson and the other guests for a finale performance of “Meet on the Ledge,” a song by Fairport Convention, the influential British folk-rock group co-founded by Richard.

Other artists who joined Thompson at the concert: Linda Thompson, Spinal Tap bassist Derek Smalls — a.k.a. comic actor Harry Shearer — and some of Richard’s former Fairport Convention band mates.

In other news, Pink Floyd recently premiered an early, previously unreleased version of “High Hopes,” a song from the band’s 1994 studio album The Division Bell, on its official YouTube channel. The track will appear on the huge Pink Floyd The Later Years box set, which will be released on November 29.

The 16-disc collection, which focuses on the band’s post-Roger Waters output, features five CDs, six Blu-rays and five DVDs. A two-LP or single-CD “highlights” package also will be available.
