The Keep Arkansas Beautiful Commission’s (KAB) annual Great Arkansas Cleanup effort has attracted thousands of volunteers during September, but Arkansans who have not volunteered yet are encouraged to help beautify the state during October. There are cleanups registered in 56 counties, including Baxter, Boone, Fulton, Izard, Marion, Newton and Searcy.Mark Camp, KAB executive director, says, “It is encouraging to see how dedicated Arkansans are during our cleanup seasons through litter removal, recycling and other beautification efforts. Year-round, we work to educate Arkansans and visitors to our state that it is our responsibility to keep our state in a pristine state so we can all enjoy its natural beauty.”

Last year’s Great Arkansas Cleanup featured 164 community events across the state involving more than 6,000 Arkansans, who picked up more than 82,000 pounds of litter and collected more than 821,000 pounds of bulky waste from roughly 747 miles of roadway and more than 900 miles of waterway.

Those who would like to organize an event in a local community can visit keeparkansasbeautiful.com to access free promotional tools such as a cleanup instructional video and printable publicity materials. KAB will also provide cleanup materials and supplies, such as T-shirts, trash bags, gloves and safety vests, to local events, while supplies last.

Volunteers can also find a cleanup by visiting KAB’s full calendar of events at keeparkansasbeautiful.com/events.

The Great Arkansas Cleanup is sponsored by the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality, Arkansas Department of Transportation, the Keep Arkansas Beautiful Foundation and Keep America Beautiful.

The Keep Arkansas Beautiful Commission (KAB), consisting of a professional staff and a nine-member advisory board appointed by the governor, is a division of the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism. As a certified state affiliate of Keep America Beautiful Inc., KAB’s goal is to inspire and educates individuals to reduce litter, recycle and keep Arkansas beautiful.

KAB is funded through its 1 percent portion of the eighth-cent Conservation Tax and by mobilizing volunteers returns to the state a cost benefit of more than $6 in community service for each program dollar spent.
