A Mountain Home man accused of threatening a number of people, including his ex-girlfriend and members of the family sheltering her, is now being charged as a habitual offender.

The new charge would permit prosecutors to add more time to any sentence 46-year-old Clay Blount might receive.

Electronic court records show Blount’s criminal history contains a number of charges brought in several Arkansas counties.

According to the probable cause affidavit in the terroristic threatening case in Baxter County, Blount’s anger seems mainly directed toward the family sheltering the ex-girlfriend and assisting her in getting back on her feet after breaking up with Blount.

Blount is alleged to have sent a message in January warning the family to “find a hole to hide in,” and to have threatened, “the whole mountain” the family lived on, “is going to burn down.”

In late January, the Baxter County Sheriff’s Office investigator handling the case was told Blount had come into the ex-girlfriend’s place of employment and had to be chased away. The investigator located Blount after the incident walking along Arkansas Highway 5 South. He was brought in for questioning. Blount told the investigator he did not know his ex-girlfriend worked at the establishment. As to the threatening messages, Blount is alleged to have conceded he might have sent them, but claimed he was high on methamphetamine and hazy on details.

The investigator warned Blount not to have any further contact with the ex-girlfriend or the family with which she lives, and he said he understood and would abide by the instructions.

In early February, it was reported to the investigator Blount was again trying to establish contact with the woman despite the warning he had been given.

Both the ex-girlfriend and members of the family assisting her have told investigators they fear Blount is capable of carrying out his threats.

He was arrested and initially charged with first-degree terroristic threatening. The habitual offender charged was filed Oct. 2.

Blount was ordered to reappear in circuit court Oct. 31.
