MH’s Godfrey, Heide advance to semifinals of state tennis tourney

The Mountain Home High School tennis teams began action in the Class 5A State Tournament at Hot Springs Country Club.

Sarah Godfrey and Macie Heide picked up two consecutive victories in the girls’ doubles bracket. Godfrey and Heide won their first match in straight sets as they beat Allison Hall and Shealyn Horton of Benton with scores of 6-1 and 6-0. They later won their quarterfinal match with a straight set victory of 6-2 and 6-2. Godfrey and Heide are scheduled to meet Mary Claire Brown and Peyton Mullen of Jonesboro Tuesday in the semifinals.

Meagan Beck represented the Lady Bombers in the singles division as she beat Jalisa Berrieum of Sylvan Hills in straight sets 6-0 and 6-2. Beck was later eliminated in the quarterfinals as she fell 6-3 and 6-1.

Dodge Harris had a tough day in the boys’ singles bracket. Harris lost to Ben Hollis of Hot Springs Lakeside 6-0 and 6-0.

Clayton Jones and Jake McGehee suffered the same fate in the boys’ doubles division. The match needed all three sets, by Jones and McGehee lost to Greyson Cornelison and Walker Wood of Lakeside 1-6, 6-2 and 7-6.
