Courtesy of Bow + Arrow Entertainment/Gravitas VenturesThe Monkees‘ Micky Dolenz, KISS‘ Gene Simmons and Guns N’ Roses guitairst Slash are among the rock stars featured in a new documentary The Rainbow, which tells the story of the legendary Sunset Strip watering hole The Rainbow Bar & Grill and the nearby Whisky a Go Go nightclub. The film will be available on demand and as a digital video starting Tuesday, October 29.
The movie also focuses on Mario Maglieri, who co-founded and co-owned The Rainbow and The Whisky until his death in 2017, as well as his son and grandson — Mikael and Mikey — who are carrying on the family businesses. Mario became well-known for helping many musicians get their start in the Los Angeles area.
The Rainbow also features conversations with Ozzy Osbourne, Lita Ford, ex-Guns N’ Roses drummer Matt Sorum and, in one of his final interviews, Motorhead frontman Lemmy Kilmister. The bar was famously Lemmy’s favorite L.A. haunt and a lounge was named after him after he died in 2016.
“Telling the story of The Rainbow Bar & Grill, The Whisky a Go Go and the Maglieri family in this film has been a great honor and one that truly represents the history of rock ‘n’ roll in America,” says Matthew Perniciaro, one of the documentary’s producers.
