The 2019 Autumn in the Ozarks Quilt Show opens Thursday for a three-day run at the Baxter County Fairgrounds’ education building in Mountain Home. Show hours are 9 until 4 Thursday and Friday and 9 until 2 on Saturday.
Visitors to the show will see nearly 300 quilts. They include modern and art quilts, in addition to traditionally styled ones. There will also be 14 vendors offering quilting equipment and supplies, including a scissors sharpener.

Some of the exhibited quilts will be available for purchase, and other items made by guild members and quilting gear will be available through the guild members’ country store. Lunch and snacks will be available from EHC Patchwork Extension Club.In addition, there will be a quilt raffle and a live auction of decorated boxer shorts benefiting Peitz Cancer Support House. The live “Think Outside the Boxers” auction begins at noon Saturday.

A drawing for the guild’s 2019 raffle quilt is scheduled to follow the auction at 1. Tickets for the quilt will be available at the show.

Guild members have decorated apparel before to benefit local service organizations. Ten years ago, they decorated bras to raise awareness of breast cancer and support the Peitz Cancer Support House. They embellished aprons to benefit the Food Bank of North Central Arkansas. And they adorned book bags for Twin Lakes Literacy Council volunteer tutors.

Quilt Show Chair Vicki Kauth says, “This year we are embellishing boxer shorts to entertain ourselves and draw your attention to below-the-belt cancers. These include prostate and testicular cancers affecting men, ovarian and cervical cancers affecting women and cancers of the stomach, liver and colon, which plague both.”

Kauth says, “We anticipate a rollicking good time with live models, a great auctioneer and, we hope, boisterous audience participation.”

In addition, Alice McElwain, an American Quilters Society appraiser, will be on hand to provide written appraisals for $50 per quilt.

Appraiser appointments are available Thursday through Saturday.

McElwain judges quilt shows and gives programs to quilt guilds, clubs and organizations.

She is also a member of the Professional Association of Appraisers of Quilt Textiles and an active member of national and regional quilt study groups.

She bases her appraisals on current market values, information from personal databases, antique quilt dealers, auction house sales, formulas for compilation and online auctions.

The valuation is based on her best judgment and opinion; it is not a warranty the quilt will bring the appraised value, if it is ever offered for sale.

Certified Quilt Judge Kathi Eubank of Hot Spring Village will be in attendance to evaluate quilts made by Hill ‘N Hollow Quilters Guild members. Eubank was certified to judge quilt shows by the National Association of Certified Quilt Judges.
