Megaforce RecordsFounding Santana and Journey singer/keyboardist Gregg Rolie has just released a video for “What About Love,” the lead single from his new solo album, Sonic Ranch. The clip premiered Wednesday on Billboard.com and also can be viewed on Rolie’s official YouTube channel.

The 72-year-old who has played in Ringo Starr‘s All Starr Band since 2012, tells ABC Audio that Starr’s famous “peace and love” message was the inspiration for “What About Love.”

“I came up with this thing and [the All Starr Band] jammed a little bit of it at a soundcheck, and then nothing ever happened,” Rolie recalls. “Then I found the bass line when I went home, and I said, ‘I’m gonna record this.’ And I just went, ‘I’m going to make this “What About Love,” based upon [Ringo’s peace and love] message.'”

The two-time Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee also notes that the song expresses his frustration at the world’s current contentious social and political climate.

“I mean, really, quite simply, how about it, you guys?” Gregg declares. “You’ve tried all this other stuff. Every year, somebody’s doing something. It’s just a little boring for the average Joe on the street, which I am.”

The “What About Love” video features a series of quick-cut clips capturing Rolie working in the studio and rehearsing, as well as footage of him playing live with Neal Schon‘s Journey Through Time side project along with bassist Mario Mendoza and ex-Journey drummer Deen Castronovo.

“Everyone who’s seen [the video] goes, ‘You look younger,'” Gregg maintains. “And part of the reason was ’cause I wanted to…have it look the way I feel.”

Rolie adds that Starr gave the video a thumbs-up, “He loved it. He goes, ‘This is really, really good.'”
