Reprise RecordsColorado, Neil Young‘s new album with his frequent backing band Crazy Horse, hit stores today. The 10-track collection finds Young delving into familiar topics like his love for wife Daryl Hannah, his concerns over climate change, and his disdain for the current U.S. administration.
While Neil has been outspoken politically via his music and his activist endeavors, as a Canadian citizen, he hasn’t been able make his voice be heard by voting. Young tells the Los Angeles Times that’s expected to change next month.
“I’ve passed all the tests; I’ve got my appointment, and if everything goes as planned, I’ll be taking the oath of [U.S.] citizenship [on November 12],” he reveals. “I’ll be able to vote.”
Neil, who moved to the States more than 50 years ago, adds, “I’m still a Canadian; there’s nothing that can take that away from me…But I live down here; I pay taxes down here; my beautiful family is all down here — they’re all Americans, so I want to register my opinion.”
Colorado is Young’s first album with Crazy Horse since 2012, and the first to feature multi-instrumentalist Nils Lofgren as a member of the group since the 1970s.
As previously reported, the sessions for the album were filmed for the new documentary Mountaintop, which was screened in more than 100 theaters on Tuesday. The film captures Young’s volatile interactions with co-producer John Hanlon and other studio staff as he works to get the sound of the tracks to his liking.
“It was a real eye-opener,” he says of the flick. “It reveals more about what happens, more than people are used to seeing.”
As for whether he’ll tour with Crazy Horse to support Colorado, Neil says, “We’re just waiting for the right time to do that.”
