A 26-year-old man once accused of stabbing his mother and currently facing drug-related offenses entered a guilty plea to the newest charges against him during a session of Baxter County Circuit Court Thursday. James Colson of Mountain Home was sentenced to six years in prison, with two suspended and four to serve.

Colson’s latest arrest came in late February and was made easier when a ceiling in a bedroom closet at his mother’s apartment collapsed.

According to the probable cause affidavit, a Cotter Police officer on routine patrol first spotted Colson in the rear passenger seat of a vehicle. The officer reported the car turned into an apartment complex along Walnut Hill Lane. When the officer made contact with those in the vehicle, they reported Colson had gone into an apartment to visit his mother.

The officer found Colson had an active arrest warrant and went to the mother’s apartment. She told the officer her son was not there and gave permission to search the unit. As the mother walked the officer to the back bedroom in an attempt to prove her son was not present, the ceiling in her bedroom closet collapsed. She then confessed her son was hiding in the attic.

The officer reported he held a “flap of insulation” up with a cane and shined a flashlight on his service revolver that he held in such a way it would be visible to anyone in the attic. For a half hour, the officer reported he ordered Colson to come out of his attic hiding place.

Colson did eventually emerge and was arrested. A search of the vehicle Colson had arrived in revealed a syringe, a pipe for smoking methamphetamine and a pink pill used for the treatment of anxiety.

In another case, Colson faced drug-related charges stemming from a traffic stop in Mountain Home in late June. A substance field testing positive for methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia were found in the vehicle being driven by Colson.

The stabbing incident occurred in late February last year. Colson was reported to have stabbed his mother in the arm at her home. When Cotter Police arrived, Colson had fled. He was found barricaded in a bathroom of his residence along U.S. Highway 62/412 West along with a bottle of vodka. Colson was given 12 months probation in the stabbing case.
