The show features the famous singer and TV actor reminiscing about some of his exciting experiences during the 1960s, including playing music in his home studio with legends like John Lennon and Brian Wilson. Dolenz also chats about the surprising opening act that joined The Monkees for part of their 1967 tour…The Jimi Hendrix Experience.

In a preview clip from the episode, Micky recalls, “I’m at the Monterey Pop Festival, and all of a sudden these three guys come on stage in [these psychedelic] clothes…and they just looked incredible…I suggested to the producers of our show, that would be a really cool opening act…’cause they’re very theatrical, and The Monkees was this theatrical act.”

Dolenz continues, “I guess [the band] liked the idea, our producers liked the idea, so sure enough, a few months later, we’re opening up [our tour] and Jimi is the opening act. And he did six or eight shows or something with us, and he was a great guy…We had a lot of fun.”

Micky also notes that The Fifth Dimension and Ike & Tina Turner also opened for The Monkees on that trek.

In conjunction with the Mixtape episode, Micky created a personal playlist that includes some of his favorite all-time songs, as well as tunes that have impacted his life and career. His mix features plenty of Monkees tunes; songs by Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, Bruce Springsteen, Ike & Tina Turner and Harry Nilsson; and tracks by some of his tour mates on the “It Was Fifty Years Ago Today” White Album tribute trek, including Todd Rundgren and Christopher Cross.
