Ten school districts in North Central Arkansas are among 175 across the state sharing $6.7 million in awards for achieving high student performance.

The Arkansas Department of Education’s Division of Secondary and Elementary Education made the awards through the Arkansas School Recognition Program. The program provides awards to the top 10 percent of schools achieving high student performance on the state-required assessments in grades three through 10.

Awards also are given to the top 10 percent of public schools achieving high student academic growth, which includes high school graduation rates where applicable. Awards announced Friday are based on assessment results from the 2018-2019 school year and graduation rates from the 2017-2018 school year.

Among the 50 schools in the top 5 percent for performance were the Eagle Heights Elementary School at Harrison, Salem Elementary School and Valley Springs Middle School. These districts will receive $100 per student, with Harrison awarded $20,400, Salem $46,300 and Valley Springs $27,100.

Four schools in North Central Arkansas were among those receiving awards for being in the top 6 to 10 percent in performance. Those districts will receive $50 per student, with Forest Heights Elementary School at Harrison awarded $20,000, Skyline Heights Elementary School at Harrison awarded $22,250, Melbourne Elementary School awarded $22,950, and Marshall Elementary School awarded $12,600.

Six local schools were among those in the top 5 percent for growth/graduation and will receive $100 per student. The six schools and their awards are Calico Rock High School, $16,000; Jasper High School, $23,800; Kingston High School, $11,700; Rural Special High School, $10,000; St. Joe K-12 School, $13,600; and Salem Elementary School, $46,300.

One local school was among those receiving an award for being in the top 60 to 10 percent for growth/graduation and will receive $50 per student. Flippin High School will receive $11,550.

Schools receiving recognition funds are required to establish a committee to determine how to use the funds. Funds must be used for faculty and staff bonuses, educational equipment and materials, or personnel to assist with improving or maintaining student performance. The committee will include the principal, a teacher, and a parent representative.
