Election filing deadline passes; another race develops in Baxter County

The deadline to file for political party, nonpartisan and school board candidates for the 2020 elections has passed, and another race has developed in Baxter County. Mary Caster Glotzl will challenge incumbent William Waldrop in the Republican primary for the District 4 Justice of the Peace position.

The Baxter County Quorum Court will have another race in the February primary. Republicans Roger Steele and Reginald “Zach” Watson will square off for the District 8 seat. Current Justice of the Peace Edna Fusco did not file for reelection.

The race for the District 1 constable got a little bigger. James Higgins filed for the position as an independent candidate, and he will square off in November against the Republican primary winner between incumbent David Witherington and challenger Douglas Stephens.

Dennis Frank was the lone candidate to file for District 1 on the Baxter County Quorum Court. Gary Smith did not file for reelection.

Other justices of the peace filed for reelection on the Republican ticket, and they will not be opposed. The incumbents include Lucille Soltysik in District 2, Robert Lowery in District 3, Maryanne Edge in District 5, Rhonda “Tink” Albright in District 6, Charles Osgood in District 7, Cameron Davis in District 9, Kevin Litty in District 10 and Ty Chapman in District 11.

Five other Republican candidates in Baxter County will run unopposed for constable positions. Patrick Smith will run for District 2, Caleb Johnson will seek the District 3 nomination, William Lucas filed for District 4, Jim Eberly will run for District 5, and Frankie Baker will be on the ballot for District 11. No one filed in Districts 6 through 10.

There will be no school board races in Baxter County. Incumbents Bill Wehmeyer and Jason Schmeski will run unopposed for the Mountain Home School Board. Shannon Moody will seek the District 1 position on the Norfork School Board to succeed Levi Haught, who did not file for reelection. Luke Walker filed for reelection on the Cotter School Board, and he will not face opposition.

One race has developed on the Marion County Quorum Court. Incumbent Justice of the Peace Raymond Mayo will be challenged by James Underwood in the Republican primary for District 5.

All other current JPs in Marion County will not face opposition. The Republican candidates include Marty Nickels in District 2, Talon Vancurren in District 3, Rickie W. White in District 4, Wesley Shipman in District 7, Claudia Gibson Brigham in District 8 and Joyce Ann McCalla in District 9. Michael Scrima filed for reelection in District 1 as an independent, and Brady Madden will run to retain his seat in District 6 as a Democrat.

One candidate filed as a candidate for Marion County constable. Republican Mike Moffet will run unopposed.

Two incumbents will not face opposition in the Marion County school board races. Brent Mitchell will week reelection in Flippin, and Travis Doshier refiled for his seat at Yellville-Summit.

The primary elections in Arkansas will be held March 3. Early voting will begin Feb. 17.
