ABC/Randy HolmesIn 1996, Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong sent a 15-year-old fan a VHS tape of himself thanking her for all the letters she sent him. Now, thanks to the wonder of the internet, you can watch it yourself 23 years later.
As Reddit user Jmsmnn explains, his wife is a big Green Day fan, and, when she was younger, she’d send Armstrong letters. In order to thank her, Armstrong called her, but she thought it was a prank and hung up. Armstrong’s wife then called back to try and convince the fan that she was talking to the real deal — only for her to hang up again.
To convince her of his identity, Armstrong then sent her a VHS tape showing him reading her letters. You can watch that now via Instagram.
“She still guards this VHS tape with her life,” the caption reads.
Green Day will release their new album Father of All… on February 7. They’ll spend next summer on the Hella Mega tour with Fall Out Boy and Weezer.
