Saturday basketball schedule includes MH freshmen season openers

Basketball makes up much of the local Saturday schedule, as the season begins for the Mountain Home freshmen teams. The Junior Bombers and Junior Lady Bombers will start the campaign in Searcy as they meet the host teams of the Cub Classic.

Last year’s Mountain Home girls ended up with a record of 13-14 and advanced to the district tournament quarterfinals. Lindsey Leonard is in her second year at the helm of the Junior Lady Bombers, and she says this year’s squad is ready to get on the floor.

The Mountain Home freshmen boys were 4-22 during the 2018-2019 season and were knocked out of the district tournament in the opening round. Junior Bombers’ head coach Cody Wilmath says this year’s squad is also looking forward to getting the season started.

The girls’ game tips off at 6:30 followed by the boys’ contest.

There’s also plenty of high school hoops in the area as the Arvest Bank Tournament gets underway in Flippin. Saturday’s boys’ games will be in the old gym as Cotter and Jasper tip off at 10 a.m., St. Joe faces Kingston at 11:30, Yellville-Summit takes on Deer at 1, and Lead Hill plays Alpena at 2:30. In the girls’ games in the new gym, Mountain Home Christian Academy and Jasper get underway at 10, Flippin will be paired with Deer at 11:30, Cotter meets Calico Rock at 1, and Yellville-Summit faces Kingston at 2:30.

Three area high school teams will be in Clinton to begin the First Service Bank Tournament. Valley Springs opens with a doubleheader against Quitman starting with the boys at 1 p.m., and Rural Special’s boys take on the host Yellowjackets at 6:20.
