MH freshmen basketball teams lose season openers in Cub Classic

The season began Saturday for the Mountain Home freshmen basketball team in the Cub Classic at Searcy as both teams fell to the host school.

The Junior Bomber boys lost to the Cubs 38-30. Colby Lockhart led Mountain Home with 12 points. The Junior Bombers start the campaign at 0-1, and their next game in the tournament will be Tuesday.

Mountain Home’s girls were edged out by Searcy by a final of 33-31. The Junior Lady Bombers drop to 0-1 on the year, and they’ll return to Searcy Tuesday night for a 6:30 game against West Memphis Wonder.

Several high school basketball teams were in action Saturday as the Arvest Bank Tournament began in Flippin.

Cotter’s boys advanced to the quarterfinals with a 56-37 victory over Jasper. Dylan Dwyer led Cotter with 22 points, including 18 from three-point range, Jackson Evans scored 14, and Tucker Coots added 11. Cotter will face Bergman on Monday.

Yellville-Summit was sent to the consolation bracket with a 54-51 loss to Deer. The Panthers will play again Wednesday. Norfork will be the Antlers’ next opponent in the quarterfinals.

Lead Hill won its tournament opener Saturday with a 40-33 decision over Alpena. The Tigers will be paired with Flippin on Monday.

Cotter’s girls will join their male counterparts in the quarterfinals, after getting past Calico Rock 59-54 in overtime. The Lady Warriors will take on Bergman on Monday.

Flippin was able to invoke the mercy rule as they routed Deer 71-26. The Lady Bobcats will go up against Norfork in the quarterfinals.

Yellville-Summit fell in its opener on the girls’ bracket. The Lady Panthers were sent to the consolation bracket after falling to Kingston 55-23.

Mountain Home Christian Academy had the first girls’ game of the day and fell to Jasper 73-41. The Lady Eagles’ first consolation game will be Wednesday. The Lady Pirates will face Lead Hill in Monday’s quarterfinals.

Valley Springs ended up splitting with Quitman to begin the First Service Bank Tournament in Clinton. The Tigers invoked the mercy rule in the boys’ game, as they pounded the Bulldogs 71-40. Valley Springs had a different result in the girls’ contest, as they fell to Quitman 40-38.
