The Calico Rock Community Foundation has been awarded a challenge grant from the Windgate Foundation. The local organization will receive $50,000 from the Little Rock nonprofit if it raises another $50,000 in matching donations by the end of 2020.

The Windgate Foundation is an organization devoted to the arts. It awarded $10,000 to the Tomlinson Art and Science Center two years ago when the Calico Rock Museum was expanding.

Work continues on expanding the museum. The Main Street level has an opening planned for March, and it will include a new visitor center, an artisan gift shop, archives, a boardroom, foundation offices, an expanded art center and a new classroom. The art and science center exhibits are also expected to be reopened in March, along with a few history exhibits located on the Main Street level.

The Peppersauce level is expected to be open in June and will include a new expo center, an outdoor event venue, overflow parking for Main Street tourists and all of the museum’s history exhibits. The exhibits will be interactive as guests enter a Cherokee wiki hut, walk along the banks of the White River, stroll the decks of a steamboat, enter a one-room log cabin and more.

Representatives of the Calico Rock Community Foundation say all of the progress and timing depends on funding. The foundation is seeking donations from anyone willing to assist in the project to double its gift and collect the grant from the Windgate Foundation.
