“We are incredibly excited to announce that @PaulMcCartney will headline the Pyramid Stage on the Saturday night of Glastonbury 2020,” the festival tweeted. The massive event is celebrating its 50th anniversary next year.
McCartney retweeted the announcement and added, “Hey Glasto – excited to be part of your Anniversary celebrations. See ya next summer!”
The festival’s organizer, Emily Eavis, wrote on Instagram that the booking as “an absolute dream come true,” adding, “There really was no one that we wanted more for the 50th anniversary.”
Macca will turn 78 the week before his performance, which will make him the oldest artist ever to headline the festival’s Pyramid Stage. He’ll beat out Charlie Watts of The Rolling Stones, who was 73 when the Stones headlined in 2013.
This will be Sir Paul’s second time headlining; the first was in 2004, when he played a 33-song set including solo songs, Beatles classics and Wings hits, as well a performance of “In Spite of All the Danger,” a song he recorded in 1958 with John Lennon and George Harrison in their pre-Beatles band The Quarrymen.
Paul is only the second artist to be confirmed for the 2020 edition of the festival so far: The other is 75-year-old Diana Ross, who’ll be performing in the “legend” slot traditionally held on a Sunday afternoon on the Pyramid stage.
