The mission of Baxter County Veterans Services is to provide help and assistance to veterans to obtain the services they deserve. Baxter County has a high concentration of veterans, and the Veterans Services office in Mountain Home normally averages 50 visits per week from veterans, although it recently had a one-week period in which 73 veterans came through.
Veterans from all branches of military service are entitled to different types of benefits and assistance, but for many, filing for claims and services can be stressful, confusing and time-consuming. Some veterans may also be unsure of where to turn, so they often go without the help they need. The Veterans Services can provide help with counseling, benefits or questions about any services.
Baxter County currently has the highest rate of veteran suicide in the state of Arkansas, and that’s a statistic the local Veterans Service office would like to curb. On a recent edition of the Talk of the Town on KTLO-FM, Veteran’s Services Officer Charles Leonard said the Mountain Home Community-Based Outpatient Clinic in the Twin Lakes Plaza is a good first option, but there may be some who believe they don’t qualify for assistance.
