Salem, Melbourne to compete in state quarterfinals

High school football is included on the local Black Friday schedule, as two area teams will continue the postseason. Salem and Melbourne are both set for quarterfinal action.

Salem ended up changing its venue due to the condition of its home field. The Greyhounds’ game against Carlisle in the Class 2A State Playoffs has been relocated to Mountain Home High School Career Academies.

Salem brings a record of 9-1 into the game. The Greyhounds played their first playoff game last week and defeated Parkers Chapel.

Carlisle is 9-3 after going on the road and upsetting Foreman. Salem head coach Clay Wiggins says the Bison are one of the hottest teams in the state right now.

Kickoff at Bomber Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Melbourne will play its third road game in the Class 3A State Playoffs. The Bearkatz will head toward the Mississippi River to meet Osceola.

Melbourne is 10-2 on the season. The Bearkatz went to Malvern last Friday and picked up a victory over Glen Rose.

Osceola has a record of 10-1. The Seminoles picked up a 30-point win in their first postseason game last week.

Melbourne head coach Kevin McCarn says one of the biggest keys to being successful against Osceola will be tackling.
