The Humane Society of North Central Arkansas is partnering with animal shelters throughout the country to encourage reading and compassion during the holiday season. The local “Deck the Howls” event is scheduled for Thursday evening from 5:30 to 7:30 at the Humane Society on Arkansas Highway 201 North in Mountain Home.

Deck the Howls originated in 2015 with the Humane Society of Missouri and is part of its larger Shelter Buddies Reading Program. Since then, the Humane Society of Missouri has trained more than 3,200 young readers to become part of the program, where they have spent over 6,000 hours reading to and comforting shelter animals. Nearly 400 shelters across the world have requested information from the Humane Society of Missouri to implement similar programs at their organizations.

Children ages 5 and older are invited to read holiday tales to adoptable pets during the Humane Society of North Central Arkansas’s event while wearing their favorite pajamas. Crafts, cocoa and cookies will also be available.

Families with children interested in participating can register in person at the shelter office. The cost is $5 or a bag of pet food.
