Supporters of a petition initiative to place a measure before registered voters in Mountain Home for the approval of off-premise sales of alcoholic beverages on Sunday are making their final push.

While alcohol can be served on Sunday in local restaurants, the sale at grocery stores, gasoline stations and liquor stores is prohibited in Baxter County, with the exceptions being the cities of Norfork and Salesville. Supporters of the initiative hope to secure a sufficient number of signatures to allow the measure to be placed on the March 3 primary election ballot.

About 100 additional signatures were submitted late last week to Mountain Home City Clerk Brian Plumlee for validation. These signatures represent the second delivery, with the first batch containing about 700. Supporters of the initiative believe a minimum of 622 signatures of registered voters living inside the city limits of Mountain Home is necessary for the measure to be placed on the ballot. The number is based on 15% of the ballots cast in the 2018 gubernatorial election.

Petitions are available at three establishments in Mountain Home-Jack’s Package Store, Judicious Spirits and Midtown Spirits.

With the final push being made, organizers have established an alternate avenue for collecting signatures. Registered Mountain Home voters may reach out to an email address, sundaysales@mtnhome.com, and a petition will be delivered to them. The email must include the name of at least one registered Mountain Home voter, with address and phone number, for verification purposes.

The deadline for securing the signatures is Dec. 26, which is 70 days prior to the primary election, according to municipal statute.
