Warming centers opening for the homeless in Mountain Home

A group helping the homeless in the Twin Lakes Area has announced the opening of warming centers in Mountain Home.

Representatives from Hope for All announced Monday The Salvation Army Fellowship Hall, located at 121 State Highway 201  North, will serve as a warming center from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. on nights 35 degrees and colder. If the temperature is already under 35 degrees, the center will open at 6 p.m.

A daytime warming center will open from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. at The Salvation Army Food Pantry when the weather is under 35 degrees.

Gerald Caster, an advocate for the homeless, says these individuals are at risk for frostbite, hypothermia, or even death during the winter.

The warming centers have been long needed, according to Caster.

The group has also provided survival support for over 100 homeless individuals with clothing, food, transportation, tents and sleeping bags, as well as 70 hotel rooms in freezing weather. Donations are tax deductible Caster says, and a $50 donation can provide one night in a hotel room or help in the warming centers.
