Groundbreaking ceremonies were held Wednesday morning for Baxter Regional Medical Center’s new 23,000-square-foot outpatient surgery center.

The $8.7 million facility will be located at the front of the hospital in an area previously serving as a parking lot. Employee parking has been relocated to the rear of the medical center.

While the outpatient surgery center has been in the planning stage for about two years, the medical community has discussed the need for a facility providing this service for about 20 years. BRMC President and CEO Ron Peterson says when he arrived at the medical center 12 years ago, he found a book on his desk with information about earlier planning for an outpatient surgery center.

He told KTLO, Classic Hits and The Boot news after Wednesday’s ceremony, while the need has existed for some time, now is the right time for the construction.

With earthmoving equipment working in the background, hospital officials and employees were joined by nine physician partners in the endeavor.

Dr. Paul Neis spoke on behalf of the group of physicians who have formed a limited liability company (LLC) in the endeavor. The other physicians include Eric Arp, Harley Barrow, Daniel Decker, Jason Lindsay, Merwin Moore, John Neis, Corey Smith and Kevin Steffan.

BRMC’s Outpatient Surgery Center represents the medical center’s largest brick and mortar project since the opening of the six-story tower in 2000.
