High school students from Mountain Home and Cotter who were among those sponsored by the Rotary Club of Mountain Home to attend Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) were special guests of the local civic organization at a meeting earlier this month.

These juniors from Cotter and Mountain Home high schools spent a four-day weekend at camp in Oklahoma with hundreds more from the four-state Rotary district.

They were accompanied by RYLA chair Rick Steiner and Rotary board member Renae Schocke, who were both camp chaperones.

The young people were instructed in self-discipline, formed bonds and friendships, built self-confidence and trusted each other for support and encouragement.

As each student spoke, they unanimously thanked the club for their scholarship to attend RYLA, and they told Rotarians, “It was the best experience I’ve ever had” and “I’m a better person for having gone.”

Mark Hopper with the Past Presidents Council also presented the Featured Rotarian of the Month to Perry McDonald for November and to RYLA Coordinator Rick Steiner for December. They join Trevor Himschoot who was selected for October. Rotarians also volunteered to ring Salvation Army bells, promoting the Rotary motto “Service Above Self.”
