Local basketball teams have mixed results in tournament play

Three local high school boys’ basketball teams began action in the Cabool Holiday Tournament on Thursday.
Gainesville was able to advance to the quarterfinals of the tournament. The Bulldogs defeated Plato 70-62.
Lutie did not fare as well, as they were sent to the consolation side of the bracket. The Indians fell to Alton 85-35.
Dora will join Gainesville in the quarterfinals after breezing through its opener. The top-seeded Falcons beat up on Koshkonong 85-37.

Two local girls’ teams played their second game in the Mountain Grove Holiday Tournament.
Gainesville was eliminated from the consolation side of the bracket. The Lady Bulldogs lost to the host Lady Panthers 46-38.
Dora had a rough outing in its quarterfinal game. The Lady Falcons fell to top-seeded Mountain View-Liberty 76-47.

Three area squads played their first games in the Cornerstone Bank Holiday Hoops Tournament at Berryville.
Viola’s girls remained undefeated in 20 games on the season after an easy first round victory. The Lady Longhorns put the mercy rule in effect, as they destroyed Green Forest 57-25.
The Mountain View girls also advanced to the semifinals of the tournament. The Lady Yellowjackets topped eStem 48-38.
Mountain View was not as fortunate on the boys’ side. The Yellowjackets suffered a 47-42 defeat to Shiloh Christian.

Three area boys’ teams were in Highland for their first games in the Bad Boy Mowers Ronnie Brogdon Invitational Tournament, as all three are playing in the Maverick Division.
Mammoth Spring was able to hang on for the opening round win. The Bears picked up the 32-27 victory over Wynne.
Mammoth Spring will be paired with Highland in the Maverick Division semifinals. Calico Rock fell to the host Rebels 51-39.
Melbourne will join the Pirates on the consolation side of the bracket. The Bearkatz lost to Strong 63-58.

Izard County’s boys were unable to hang on to their second half lead in their opener of the Beach Ball Classic in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The Cougars fell 73-64 to St. Francis from Alpharetta, Georgia.
Caleb Faulkner was Izard County’s top scorer with 23 points, Justus Cooper scored 21, and Coby Everett added 18 points.
The Cougars drop to 16-3 on the season.

Three area girls’ teams opened the Pink and White Tournament on the campus of Drury University in Springfield.
Melbourne dominated its way to the White Division quarterfinals. The Lady Bearkatz routed Buffalo 69-32.
Melbourne’s next opponent will be Branson. The Lady Pirates defeated Camdenton by a final of 59-50.
West Plains did not have any trouble with its opener in the Pink Division. The Lady Zizzers pounded Aurora 68-18.

Both of Harrison’s teams were victorious, as they started hosting the Lendel Thomas Classic.
The Lady Goblins played another area team in the pool play format. Harrison beat Western Grove 55-40.
The boys’ side is a bracket format, and Harrison advanced to the semifinals. The Goblins topped the Northwest Arkansas Hornets home school team 72-50.
Western Grove’s boys moved to the consolation bracket after losing to Forrest City 63-52. Carsen Parker led the Warriors with 15 points.

Three area boys’ teams were in Springfield for the start of the Greenwood Blue and Gold Tournament.
West Plains lost its opener in the Gold Division. The Zizzers ended up falling to Ozark by a score of 67-52.
Branson picked up an upset victory to advance to the quarterfinals of the Blue Division. The Pirates got past Lebanon 50-47.
Ava also began in the Blue Division, but they were not as fortunate as Branson. The Bears lost to top-seeded Willard 46-42.
