The Bull Shoals-White River State Park will ring in the New Year with a “First Day Hike” Wednesday morning at 10:30.Hikers should gather at the Big Bluff trailhead on Powerhouse Road, just beneath the dam. The hike will be 90 minutes to two hours long on the strenuous Big Bluff trail. Plans are to complete a 1.75 mile loop. Those participating should wear comfortable walking shoes, dress for the weather and bring water. All dogs must be on a leash.

Following the hike, participants can enjoy a bonfire with a Dutch oven dessert. Hikers can also write their New Year’s resolutions and jot down their grumps and throw them in the fire.

The first part of the loop is a level trail over the remains of the railroad tram constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to bring in steel and lumber from Cotter. Once the trail crosses the paved road, it goes up a hillside to an area overlooking the White River, Bull Shoals Dam and an eagles nest on the White River.

The trail then leads to a mature, deciduous forest and across streams. Visitors can listen to birds, breathe in fresh air, discover wildlife trails and feel the wind and the warmth of the sun, or coldness of the snow. Hikers can expect to be surrounded by the quiet beauty of nature in winter, experience spectacular views and vistas and benefit from the company of a knowledgeable state park guide.

The event is free to the public, and there are no age restrictions, but due to rugged terrain, the trail is not ADA accessible.
