Area finishes the year strong in sales tax collections

Sales tax collections continue to climb in the Twin Lakes Area.After reviewing the collection reports, Baxter County Treasurer Jenay Mize says she is forever thankful the economy has stood strong throughout 2019. Mize also notes the increase may include collections from online vendors, following recently enacted legislation requiring them to collect and remit sales taxes to the state beginning last July.

Mize says the news is also good with regard to the one-quarter percent sales tax dedicated for the maintenance and operation of the Baxter County Detention Center.

Over at the City of Mountain Home, Treasurer Marshella Norell says collections from the county were $183,475, up $7,756 or 4.41% from the prior year.

Year-to-date county sales tax received by the city is up $87,764 or 4.19%.

The city sales tax received in December was $419,426, up $15,962 or a 3.96% increase over December of 2018.

Year-to-date city sales tax generated is up 2.12% or $103,458. This percentage factors in the overpayment of sales tax paid back during the months of January through August of 2018 in the amount of $431,200.

The public safety tax received was $157,284. The amount is up $5,985 over November of 2018 or a 3.96% increase. Total collected for public safety for 2019 was $1.87 million.

The Baxter County sales tax in divided among the county and the eight municipalities. In addition to Mountain Home, Gassville took in $30,628, Cotter received $14,765, Lakeview got $10,921, Norfork took in $7,531, Salesville received $6,632, Briarcliff had $3,478 and Big Flat’s share was $1,532.
