Mary McCartney/MPL Communications; ABC/Craig SjodinPaul McCartney and Queen guitarist Brian May are two of the many celebrities who’ve announced their support for Veganuary, an initiative that asks people to pledge that they’ll avoid eating meat for the month of January, and then continuine to avoid meat.

McCartney has issued a statement, declaring, “I’ve been vegetarian for over 40 years and have stayed with it because I believe that every meat-free meal is a win for animals and the planet. This is why I started Meat Free Monday with my daughters Mary and Stella, and it’s also why I support Veganuary. We’re all trying to make the world a bit better, so why not sign up, take part, give it a go, and see how you feel?”

May, meanwhile, posted a message on his social media sites, announcing, “Starting on the first of January 1, this coming year I will be doing VEGANUARY. Which means I will eat only vegan food for that month. After that, I will take a view on whether to continue or not.”

The rocker, who avidly campaigns to end fox hunting in the U.K. and supports other animal-friendly initiatives, also lists his reasons for taking part in the Veganuary campaign as “1) to lessen the suffering of animals. 2) To lessen the load on our groaning planet. 3) for my health.”

May adds, “[A]s an animal campaigner, it has been bothering me for a while that I still eat animal-derived food, that has caused indignity and pain to a non-human animal.”

The Veganuary organization is a non-profit launched in 2014 that seeks to encourage people to embrace a plant-based diet, noting that doing would promote less animal cruelty, and would have a positive impact on our health and climate change.
